I came late to the world of art. After a friend criticized my doodles in 7th grade I swore off art altogether until college (for my associate's degree) when I started drawing again. When I worked at a videogame company a few years later I became friends with many of the artists that worked there with me. I watched them work and asked a lot of questions about how they did their jobs. They encouraged me to pursue my interest in art, so when the opportunity came to go back to school for my bachelor's degree, I decided to go for it and majored in Art Education at Brigham Young University - Idaho.

I am Lanie from the Lanie Jane Fabric Co. Ever since I was a little girl growing up in Salt Lake City, Utah I have been interested in sewing. My mother and grandmothers were all very good at teaching sewing. In high school and college I took all of the sewing classes I could. When I was married and had children I took a special interest in sewing for my kids. My sister, teaches many girls to sew at The Finishing Schoolin Salt Lake City.
Our goal at the The Finishing School, located in Holladay, is to teach traditional domestic skills to children and adults of all ages in a personal and positive environment. Sewing and cooking skills are more valuable now than ever before and our classes are designed to teach these skills to the current generation. Learning to sew a patchwork quilt, to bake homemade rolls, to manage personal finance, or other essential creative tasks, fosters both confidence and independence while reinforcing solid values. We feel passionately about teaching these invaluable skills as they are steady anchors in a world of constant change.
